Floating Ink Creations

Discover the meditative beauty of suminagashi, the ancient Japanese art of marbling. Handmade products and classes in Sacramento.

About Our Craft

Suminagashi, which translates to “floating ink,” originated in 12th‑century Japan when artisans discovered that ink dropped onto water would float and spread into delicate concentric rings. By carefully laying paper or fabric on the surface, these ethereal patterns could be captured and preserved. Over the centuries the marbling technique has been used on papers, cloth and book covers; each print is a unique monotype created by the interaction of ink, water and gentle breath or motion. At Pretty Paper we honor this tradition by hand‑marbling every piece we sell and by teaching others the joy of creating their own floating ink designs.
